What to Expect

If you visit us on a Sunday
There are several things you can expect at our Sunday worship services:
A COMFORTABLE ATMOSPHERE

There is no dress code for worship at City Line. Some people come in business casual, and others come in t-shirts and jeans.

FRIENDLY PEOPLE!

As you come in, a greeter will welcome you, be available to answer any questions you might have, and hand you a bulletin that will help guide you through the worship service.

CORPORATE SINGING IN WORSHIP

We highly value our times of corporate worship through song. Corporate singing has a powerful way of glorifying Christ, bringing unity to the Body, and uniquely combining the heart and mind around the truth of the Gospel and the spiritual passion it emotes. Musically, our instrumentation is usually of the praise band genre, and our arrangements are typically contemporary. Look forward to a mix of traditional hymns and more modern songs. We are blessed with many wonderful musicians within our community, and they lead together in teams that rotate week to week.

THE BIBLE TO BE READ AND A SERMON TO FOLLOW

We value preaching that is not only faithful to the text of ancient Scripture, but also relevant to the modern listener. A good sermon not only explains the meaning of God’s Word, but also makes contemporary connections and draws out implications for our daily lives. Feel free to download previous sermons here.

AN OFFERING TO BE COLLECTED

Worship is not only a time for us to offer up our songs and prayers, but also our entire lives – including our resources. With that said, visitors should feel completely free to just let the basket pass.

THE LORD'S TABLE

Communion is a sacrament of bread and drink that Jesus has given his Church as a means of remembering – and even internalizing – the forgiveness and spiritual strength that he offers us through his broken body and poured out blood. We welcome all baptized followers of Jesus to join us.

COVID19

We have ended our formal covid19 precautions. This gives individuals and families the ability to make their own informed decisions about the restrictions and precautions they need to make. We encourage all to get vaccinated and boosted. We welcome those who are vaccinated and those who have chosen to remain unvaccinated. We welcome those who remain unmasked as well as those who wear a mask. We are continuing to stream our service over zoom. Please contact David Fuller to get on our email list for a link.

AN OVERALL FLOW TO OUR SERVICE

As with all public gatherings, there’s a certain flow to our worship, which the bulletin will help guide you through. But if following a bulletin feels restrictive, feel free to simply listen for cues from the people who will guide the service from upfront. Also, some parts of our service are scripted. This is to remind us that the point of worshipping together… is so that we can worship together—even by using the same words! Other parts of our service, on the other hand, will be completely unscripted – private moments of confession, open moments where anyone can contribute a brief prayer, and so on.

We begin with a call to worship and response in song, which reminds us that God wants us to worship him and it is our joy to do so. We then enter a time of confession and receiving forgiveness in Christ, remembering how easily we turn our worship towards lesser things, but how readily God helps us to come back. Next, we hear the Scriptures read and preached, and so experience the fact that we are not left alone to try to figure out our world and ourselves, but God has given us his Word. And finally, when we dine at the Lord’s Table and then are sent out with his blessing, we receive strength from Jesus himself to take our worship beyond just Sunday and into the rest of our week.

At the end of each City Line worship service, a word of God’s blessing – called a benediction – is pronounced. This is a reminder that in worship, we finally experience the blessing of becoming who we were made to be and what we were designed to do. And then as a congregation we are sent out to love God, our city, and the world. From the place of worship, we are sent out to extend the blessing we have received to everyone and everywhere around us.
